One Year On
Challenges Facing the Publishing Industry
Last month saw the 10th anniversary of publishing my first fantasy novel. I have seen for myself how the publishing landscape never remains constant. One year after publishing my first full-length novel for several years, the publishing industry continues to change apace, although not all changes are beneficial.
The introduction of AI also continues to be a blessing and/or a curse, depending on your viewpoint. As I have mentioned before I see AI as a tool to be used to assist authors, not replace. Whether the corporate world sees it in that way is another topic for another day.
Challenges Facing the Publishing Industry:
Technological Disruptions:
The rise of e-books, digital platforms, and new forms of content consumption has changed how people access and consume books.
Changes in Market Dynamics:
Publishing has become more competitive, with the rise of self-publishing and new platforms for writers and creators.
Economic Issues:
Inflation, paper costs, and the pandemic's impact on supply chains have strained publishers.
Legal and Ethical Concerns:
Issues, like cancel culture, copyright infringement, and the balance between authors' voices and staff perspectives, have created new challenges.
Burnout:
Many in the industry are experiencing burnout.
Consolidation and the Decline of Mid-Tier Publishers:
The industry has seen consolidation, with larger publishers dominating the market, and many mid-tier publishers disappearing.
The Future of Bookstores:
Indie bookstores are struggling, and there's a sense that many people prefer other forms of entertainment.
Authors' Financial Struggles:
Many authors struggle to make a living, and the success of a book is not always guaranteed.
One Year On from Publishing Dawn-Wolf

So one year on how did my book sales fare in this ever changing world? My brutally honest evaluation: They suck!
What would I do differently? I don’t really have answer. Perhaps I shouldn’t have left such a big gap between publishing books. Perhaps I shouldn’t have relied ARC readers that I didn’t know personally.
I did tried the recommended marketing stratagies, but tbh what used to work before, doesn’t work now. I have updated the cover for my 2025 mini relaunch.

If you are curious to know if this book does not suck (I can assure you it doesn’t), there’s not a vampire in sight either. Dawn-Wolf is available to purchase (e-book) at a discounted price of £2.99 (or equivilent currency) until 3rd June.

An Addition to this Newsletter

I decided to change things up a little and send out a Book Cafe and my newly created Sassy Synopsis newsletter. Technically you’ll still be receiving a bi-monthly newsletter, so your inboxes won’t receive more emails. Sassy Synopsis includes Synopses from T.V, Books, Movies and anime, served with a side of sass.
Maybe you could give me some suggestions of what you like to see.
You can find the first Sassy Synopsis newsletter here:

That’s all for now. More soon.
Kindest regards
